Naana B. (www.naanab.com) is not merely an accessories line, but a brand built on the spirit of a family and history. The designer, who goes by her namesake "Naana B" spent her childhood in Southern Africa and draws on her experiences and travels to such places as Brazil, Switzerland, Paris, Turkey, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Spain, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa and Ghana. The designer received her artistic training from Columbia University in New York City. As a steel sculpture and painting major she learned the crafts of design through installation art that incorporated fabric. The museums and art community in New York became a true inspiration. Later going on to moonlight in the fashion industry, the line Naana B. was then conceived. Naana B. creates innovative dresses, jackets and clutches. All fabrics for the line are sourced in Ghana, West Africa. The Naana B. clothing line is made from Sika print, a fabric which comes in hundreds of colorful and vibrant variations. The dresses are a fun and exciting addition to any wardrobe. The Naana B. clutch leather Vixen Collection is made from python snake skin which comes in its natural state. The Naana B. label is handmade and produced by women artisans trained by the Rural Communities Empowerment Center (RCEC) http://www.rcempowerment.org, a non-profit organization based in Ghana, West Africa. Conceived through the ingenuity, drive and passion of the designer's mother, today two empowerment centers now stand as a testament to over half a million dollars in funding from such notable organizations as the World Bank, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), to list a few. School children, adolescent school girls and women are the main beneficiaries of the center whose goal is to provide its users with four core services: library, information and communication technology, children's facilities, tailoring training. The centers are built on the motto that it "Takes One Community at a Time.” The first center (one of many more to come), was built next to the designer’s mother’s childhood home. The Naana B. label is not only a long lasting love affair with clothing and accessories, but also an investment into a community. |
